FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) High school football players in Colorado want to put the names of fallen military members on their jerseys instead of their own, but the school district turned them down, saying it could open the door to similar requests for other causes.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper reported Thursday (http://tinyurl.com/pdgennv ) that Fossil Ridge High School players in Fort Collins made the request after their coach put them through military-style fitness training and required them to research the lives of service members.

Poudre (POO'-dur) School District officials say the request is admirable and that they're working on ways to honor the military.

But they say if they approve the request, they would have to accept similar proposals from other groups because schools are publicly funded and can't favor one cause over another.
