San Marino's response to Germany's soccer diss: Yeah, but you wear socks and sandals

The national soccer team representing the European microstate of San Marino has only ever won one game. One—in 139 tries. But don’t try telling the Sammarinese that they’re a joke.

San Marino was crushed 8–0 by Germany in World Cup qualifying at home on Friday. (The 3,851 attendance figure is more than 10% of the country’s population, by the way.) The Germans thought the whole thing was a farce and didn’t hold back their criticisms.

“I do not understand the meaning of games such as these, more so with such a busy schedule,” star forward Thomas Muller said.

“San Marino has got nothing to do with professional football,” retired player Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said

As you could imagine, San Marino didn’t take kindly to that. PR chief Alan Gasperoni published a 10-point rebuttal to Muller on Facebook, which included several salient points and one.

“It’s served to make me realize that even if you wear the most beautiful Adidas kits, underneath you’re always the ones that put white socks under their sandals.”

Hey, San Marino is definitely going to lose the rematch in Germany on June 10, so they might as well play in socks and sandals.
