San Diego St. cruises past NAU
SAN DIEGO -- Donnel Pumphrey rushed 19 times for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns as San Diego State had little trouble with Northern Arizona, blowing the Lumberjacks away 38-7 on Saturday.
Each of Pumphrey's touchdowns came from 1 yard out. Quinn Kaehler added an 18 of 29 performance through the air for 205 yards and a touchdown, extending his streak of 200 yard passing games to 13.
The Aztecs scored the first 24 points of the game, pitching a shutout until well until the third quarter, before a Casey Jahn 1 yard run finally put the Lumberjacks on the board with 6:36 left in the period.
"San Diego State is a fine football club," NAU oach Jerome Souers said. "I thought they came out today and executed very well. We have to work on being more consistent. I saw some positives today, but we really need to work on everything as a whole moving forward."
Missed opportunities saw NAU down 24-0 at the half against San Diego State. The Lumberjacks garnered 71 yards of offense in the first quarter, and 41 yards in the second unable to catch a steady rhythm.
The meeting was just third time the Aztecs and Lumberjacks have ever met, and the first since 1966. San Diego State also won the first two meetings.
