Royals activate Buchter and Maurer, send down Junis

The Kansas City Royals activated Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer while sending down Jakob Junis to Triple-A Omaha.

The Kansas City Royals bullpen will be looking a bit different starting Tuesday as the team activated Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer while sending down Jakob Junis to Triple-A Omaha.

The Royals bolstered their pitching staff in a deal with the San Diego Padres on Monday, acquiring Buchter, Maurer and starter Trevor Cahill in exchange for pitchers Matt Strahm, Travis Wood and minor league infielder Esteury Ruiz.

Junis has been up and down from the minors to the majors this year, appearing in nine games (six starts) for the Royals this season. He owns a 3-2 record with a 5.50 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 36 innings pitched.

Maurer, who acted as the Padres' closer, is expected to take over in high leverage situations out of the 'pen. Maurer is 20-for-23 in save chances this season with a 5.72 ERA.

Buchter also figures to see the ball often late in games. Buchter owns a solid 3.05 ERA over 38 1/3 innings with 38 strike outs.

There's no word on when Cahill is expected to be activated.
