Rock on! Arroyo's jam sessions are better than yours
PHOENIX — On Elvis Night at Chase Field, the Diamondbacks put together a pretty good house band of their own.
Right-hander Bronson Arroyo was joined by Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist and good friend Josh Klinghoffer for a jam session following the D-backs' game against the Dodgers at Chase Field on Friday.
"They are all touring, so it is hard to get them together at one time," Arroyo said. "But they love the Dodgers as well, so it will probably be a treat for them to come in and meet 'Gibby' (Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson)."
Gibson, of course, hit the famous pinch-hit home run for the Dodgers to win Game 1 the 1988 World Series against the Athletics.
Arroyo and friends also have played several times at Peter Gammons' Hot Stove Cool Music charity event, which began in Boston 14 years ago.
But for practice sessions, the D-backs have turned a former storage room in the basement of Chase Field into a music room, with equipment provided by Fender.
Mark Trumbo, Aaron Hill and Josh Collmenter are among the D-backs who have sat in during sessions in the Fender room. The players lean toward modern rock, but pitching coach Mark Harkey has suggested that the players learn Lionel Richie "because he can rock them all."
"I'll text the boys now," Arroyo said. "We'll have to learn 'Dancing on the Ceiling,' or whatever it is called."
