A skydiver died Sunday morning after a midair collision with another parachutist during a jump in Australia, the Herald Sun reported.

The man, aged in his 40s, was taking part in the first parachute run of the day at Tooradin Airport, about 44 miles southeast of Victorian state capital Melbourne.

The collision caused his parachute to partially deflate and he plummeted to the ground. Despite efforts by paramedics, he died at the scene.

The other skydiver involved in the collision, a 23-year-old, was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he was in a serious but stable condition with lower leg injuries, possible pelvic injuries and cuts to his upper body.

"Like most other adventure sports we are aware that parachuting is potentially dangerous, however our club members are shocked at the loss," Tooradin club spokesman Andrew Mullholland said.

"Six parachutists exited the aircraft separately at about 4000 feet, and four parachutists landed safely," he said.

The club's chief instructor Peter Knights said the men were experienced skydivers.

"Everybody is in shock at the moment,'' he said.

The Australian Parachute Federation and police are investigating.
