Report: Larry Brown, SMU close to deal

The Larry Brown era – if he stays long enough for it to be called an era – appears imminent at SMU.

Several media outlets reported Tuesday that the much-traveled Brown has agreed to become SMU's coach. However, Brown told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday evening that a deal has not been finalized.

"The bottom line is, nothing's been agreed," Brown said, "but I continue to talk to SMU."

It's been speculated the deal is being held up while Brown and/or SMU finalize agreements with his future staff.

Among the names mentioned is Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich, a former UNT coach and assistant at Texas, Baylor and Oklahoma State. A source told Morning News that Jankovich would be the designated coach-in-waiting when Brown steps down.

Also being mentioned is former NBA standout Rod Strickland, currently on John Calipari's staff at Kentucky.

Brown, 71, interviewed at SMU on Sunday and Monday. He has been the head coach of 13 different college and professional teams, and is the only man to coach teams to both and NBA title (Detroit Pistons, 2004) and an NCAA Championship (Kansas, 1988).
