MADISON, Wis. — University of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez received a raise and a contract extension, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal.
Alvarez will earn a $25,000 salary increase and have a year tacked onto his contract, which will keep him as athletic director through 2018. According to the State Journal, Alvarez's compensation package for 2013-14 will be $1.050 million. UW athletics will pay for $500,000 of that salary, and the rest comes from gift funds out of the UW Foundation.
"I'll keep going as long as I keep enjoying it and as long as they want me here," the 66-year-old Alvarez told the newspaper.
According to USA Today, which compiled athletic director salaries last month for all but 11 of the 124 FBS schools, Alvarez is one of nine athletic directors making at least $1 million annually. Vanderbilt's David Williams makes $3.239 million, which is the most among athletic directors. Nebraska's Shawn Eichorst ($1.123 million) and Ohio State's Gene Smith ($1.099 million) are the only Big Ten athletic directors other than Alvarez making at least $1 million a year.
Alvarez has served as Wisconsin's athletic director since 2004. He compiled a 118-73-4 recording during his career as the Badgers' football coach and won three Rose Bowls before retiring in 2005. Most recently, Alvarez came out of retirement to coach Wisconsin's Rose Bowl game against Stanford last season following the departure of former coach Bret Bielema. Stanford went on to defeat Wisconsin 20-14 and hand Alvarez his first loss in Pasadena.
