Rep for Marlins ace Jose Fernandez details Tommy John surgery, injury
Marlins ace Jose Fernandez had successful Tommy John surgery Friday, according to a release from one of the pitcher's representatives. Fans had been made aware that Fernandez would undergo surgery in Los Angeles when the 21-year-old took to his Instagram account Thursday night to announce it.
"We are pleased that Jose's surgery went well and confident he will approach rehab with the same energy and passion that are his trademark," president of baseball operations Michael Hill said.
But the fans had waited for the inevitable news for a few days as Fernandez and his family came to grips with the diagnosis of a torn ligament in his right elbow.
Tampa-based attorney Ralph Fernandez, who is not related to the pitcher, released a statement Friday to provide more detail into the injury as well as the decision-making process to perform the procedure:
