Reds notebook, 4.27.2011
When you can't change the players, why not change the order?
That's what Reds manager Dusty Baker did before Monday's game. He moved Jay Bruce up to second in the order and Brandon Phillips, who had been second, down to fourth.
The changes worked, as the Reds beat the Brewers 9-5. Cincinnati scored two more runs then it scored in the entire three-game weekend series in St. Louis.
"I think the change to the lineup woke us up," Phillips said. "OK, now, to win games, we got to go out and do our jobs. It was an eye-opener."
Phillips went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Bruce hit a two-run home run and scored two runs.
"I used the same approach I've been having," said Phillips, who was hitting .342 in the No. 2 spot. "Go up and hit the ball the way I have been, trying to the job done. When they're in scoring position, I've got to focus on getting the RBI in. We've been struggling with that lately.
"I came through. I'm glad I did because we needed the runs."
The Reds continue to dominate the Brewers. They've won all four games against them this season and 19 of the last 22 meetings.
Bronson Arroyo, pitching with a big lead most of the night, pushed his record 3-2. Arroyo went 6 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run on five hits.

BY THE NUMBERS: 19 -- Wins for the Reds in their last 22 games against the Brewers.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It always fun to pitch when you get that many runs early. It makes it that much easier to pitch with less effort. I went out there in some of the middle innings and just cut balls at 80 mph to conserve energy." -- RHP Bronson Arroyo, who eased to a win over the Brewers after being staked to a 7-0 lead.
