After initially thinking Brad Stuart's broken jaw would not require surgery, a second opinion changed that.
The Red Wings said Stuart underwent surgery Thursday in California, a procedure performed by Dr. Louis Claymon.
The first examination of the jaw showed two non-displaced fractures that did not require surgery. Subsequent examinations revealed that two plates would need to be inserted to help stabilize the fractures.
The surgery is not expected to change the initial timetable of six to eight weeks out of the lineup.
Stuart suffered the broken jaw when he received a blindside hit to the jaw from Calgary's Tom Kostopoulos on Jan. 7.
