A star of the Tampa Bay Rays' farm system will miss significant time.

The Rays announced that right-hander Taylor Guerrieri, considered to be their top pitching prospect, had successful Tommy John surgery Wednesday to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He is expected to miss the rest of the 2013 season and at least part of the 2014 campaign.

Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure in Pensacola, Fla.

The 20-year-old native of North Augusta, S.C., was taken in the first round, 24th overall, in the 2011 MLB Draft. Guerrieri has posted a 6-2 record with a 2.01 ERA in 14 starts this season with Single-A Bowling Green, but he left his most recent start, at Cedar Rapids on July 15, after two innings because of elbow pain.

He has a 7-4 record with a 1.59 ERA in 26 minor-league starts since entering the system.
