Rangers' Profar has surgery to repair torn labrum, likely out for season
SURPRISE, Ariz. - Texas Rangers infielder Jurickson Profar had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder and has been all but ruled out for the 2015 season.
Profar, who missed all of last season because of the shoulder, will have an MRI in four months to check on the progress of the shoulder. General manager Jon Daniels said the loose timeline for Profar to start throwing is in a year but that he'll be able to swing a bat before that.
The surgery was performed in Arlington by team doctor Keith Meister. The good news coming from the surgery was no were no issues other than the labrum.
"We're looking at a loose timetable of a year for the arm to be 100 percent throwing," Daniels said. "It's possible he could be more ready to swing a bat in a game before them. We're going to take it slow. The expectation is that this will resolve the problem which has bothered him and frustrated all of us for the last year or so."
The loss of Profar left the Rangers an infielder short in camp and they addressed that Monday by signing Elliot Johnson to a minor-league deal and he'll be in big-league camp.
Johnson, 30, has played for Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Atlanta and Cleveland. He played in seven games for the Indians in 2014, hitting .105.
He's a .215 career hitter in 318 games and can play second base, shortstop, third base and the outfield.
"He's a versatile defender, plush runner, very good makeup," Daniels said. "He's a lighter hitting utility infielder. He can move around a little bit."
