Texas Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar has been cleared to begin a throwing program after being slowed by right shoulder tendinitis.
Texas general manager Jon Daniels said the team would take it slow with Profar. He expects his program to last two to three weeks before he's at full strength. Profar received an injection in the shoulder two to three weeks ago.
Daniels said Profar, whose tendinitis was in the front of his right shoulder, would be limited to designated hitting when the Rangers begin Cactus League play next week.
"Even though he's ahead of schedule the original plan of DH first in games before plays second base in a game is still the plan," Daniels said. "(Team doctor Keith) Meister was happy with what he saw."
Texas left-hander Derek Holland likely won't join the Rangers in Surprise until March. Holland, who had microfracture surgery on his left knee, is also progressing well. The original plan was for Holland to have his knee scanned after 12 weeks to see what kind of progress it's made since the surgery. That scan will now come in two weeks, which will be eight weeks after the surgery.
Daniels said Holland officially gets off crutches this week.
