Quick Hits: Verlander to DL, Lobstein to start Sunday in Cleveland
DETROIT -- The Tigers placed pitcher Justin Verlander on the 15-day disabled list because of the right triceps strain he suffered while pitching on March 27.
Tom Gage -- I didn't trust this injury from the start, Dana. I'm not calling it major, by any means -- maybe he'll miss only one start -- but I felt it was wishful thinking for the Tigers to believe it would vanish right away.
Verlander is still upbeat about it, though -- isn't he?
Dana Wakiji -- Verlander said this morning that he's 'positive' it's going to go away. Manager Brad Ausmus also said he didn't expect it to be more than one start. But we shall see.
TG -- So Anthony Gose gets his first start today in center. After seeing him all spring, what was your impression of him?
DW -- Fast, very fast. Gose is a pretty quiet guy but he's loud on the base paths. He's definitely an aggressive runner. He's also going to be fun to watch in Comerica Park's vast center field.
TG -- Kyle Lobstein, by the way, will start on Sunday instead of Verlander. Why was he sent down so early in spring training?
DW -- The Tigers made the determination early on that they believe that Lobstein and Drew VerHagen are better suited to be starters. They thought Buck Farmer and Kyle Ryan could be effective relievers. So when the guys who were set for the Tigers rotation started going longer, it was better for Lobstein to go to the minor league side so he could get stretched out.
