Quick hits: Nathan has setback; Sanchez feels better

DETROIT -- Tigers vs. Yankees, LHP David Price vs. RHP Adam Warren

Early news: Joe Nathan went to Toledo for a rehab assignment and was supposed to throw one inning, up to 25 pitches. Instead, he had to come out after throwing 10.

Nathan grimaced and called for the trainer after the last pitch and is now off getting tests.

Dana Wakiji: Tigers manager Brad Ausmus didn't want to speculate on what it might be, but we can. It obviously can't be good for a 40-year-old pitcher to grab his elbow and say that he felt like he broke his arm, right, Dave?

Dave Hogg: I was 16 when I broke my arm, and that was pretty bad. If that's how much pain Nathan felt this morning, it was an unpleasant experience.

This is a serious setback for the Tigers, though. Whether or not he was going to close, he and Joakim Soria would have given Brad Ausmus two decent relievers at the back end of the bullpen. Now, with Bruce Rondon's return also up in the air, it's starting to look like Soria against the world.

DW: Anibal Sanchez said he worked on things in the bullpen after his disastrous last start in which he gave up nine runs.

Ausmus said Sanchez worked on getting everything going toward home plate. Sanchez said his back leg was a little bit off and his front leg was a little bit straight.

Dave, you expect Sanchez to be better tomorrow, don't you?

DH: I certainly don't believe that one of the best pitchers in the American League has suddenly lost his stuff. Is it weird that he's looked this bad for two straight starts? Certainly, but I don't think it becomes an issue unless he gives up two or three homers again on Thursday.

DW: Let's be honest. This is hockey weather, not baseball weather. The Tigers have been hitting in the cage because it's been so cold and wet.

Joakim Soria came into the clubhouse wearing that fleece-lined knit hat the Tigers gave away the other day.

Dave, is it really going to snow tonight?

DH: I hate to break it to you, but those white things falling from the sky when I walked into the stadium weren't rice from someone's wedding reception.

People were freezing last night, and it was 42 at the end of the game. It's already down to 40 tonight, and we are still 90 minutes from game time.

I hope they've got plenty of coffee and hot chocolate in the concession stands, because anyone who sits through nine innings tonight is going to need it.
