ARLINGTON, Texas – On Monday, Jurickson Profar became the youngest designated hitter in Texas Rangers history.
Soon enough the 20-year-old could have another spot in the lineup — as an outfielder.
Profar, who said he never has played outfield in his life, worked with outfielder coach Gary Pettis on Monday as he continues to try to expand his utility role.
Texas manager Ron Washington said it would take more than a few days for Profar to get the hang of the outfield. But Washington added he wouldn’t be surprised if in seven to 10 days Profar would be a functional outfielder, with left field as his likely destination.
“Gary’s good, but he’s not going to turn him into an outfielder in two or three days,” Washington said. “We’re going to make sure he gets all kinds of work. And when he (Pettis) thinks he’s ready and the opportunity presents itself, we’ll put him out there. Right now Pro’s still got to do his work in other places and do work in the outfield, too. About a week, 10 days or something like that, if he gets comfortable out there, you might see him.”
