Poe leads Lumberjacks to road win
ABILENE, Texas -- Kyren Poe passed for 293 yards and one touchdown and ran for another to lead Northern Arizona to a 27-21 win over Abilene Christian on Saturday night.
Poe hit Alex Holmes, who had nine catches for 119 yards, for a 24-yard score in the second quarter than then ran 3 yards to make it 17-7 just 17 seconds before the half. Corbin Jountti had a 1 yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter as the Lumberjacks (1-1) opened a 24-7 lead.
"It's a great feeling," Holmes said. "I think that last year getting that win at UC Davis was hard to pull out, but once we did that we kind of went on a roll and I feel that's kind of the way we're going now."
Parker McKenzie, who had a 1-yard run in the second quarter to give Abilene Christian (0-2) a 7-3 lead, found Cedrick Gilbert for a 39-yard score later in the third quarter to make it 24-17. After a NAU field goal, McKenzie hit Cade Stone for a 40-yard TD with 8:46 remaining.
"This was a good win for us tonight," coach Jerome Souers said. "We expect to learn a lot during our non-conference games and tonight wasn't any different. It was good to see Kyren have a good game, and we got to play a lot of our young guys. We pulled out win tonight and the guys should be proud."
De'Andre Brown ran for 109 yards for the Wildcats.
