Penn State's Howell, Cardina lead at Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Penn State's Brittany Howell topped the heptathlon and Nittany Lions teammate Robert Cardina led the decathlon Wednesday in the Texas Relays.
Howell, a senior, had 3,442 points for an 11-point lead over Arkansas' Alex Gochenour. Kansas' Lindsey Vollmer was third at 3,367.
Howell won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.61 seconds and had top-four finishes in the high jump and 200.
Cardina, a freshman, scored 4,069 points, winning the high jump at 7 feet, 0 1/4 inches.

Defending NCAA outdoor champion Johannes Hock of Texas was second at 3,974 points, followed by Eastern Michigan's Solomon Ijah at 3,892, Rice's Scott Filip at 3,873 and New Orleans' Karl Saluri at 3,870.
