Payton finally decides on UCLA
Welcome to Signing Day 2012.
If you thought 2011 was crazy with everyone standing by in anticipation of where then-Crenshaw running back De'Anthony Thomas would end up, Oaks Christian wide receiver Jordan Payton impressively reversed his field Wednesday morning.
A day after announcing on national television that he had chosen Washington, he has signed with UCLA, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Payton was a Southern California commitment until June, but then his recruitment became wide open.
Payton announced earlier this month at the US Army All-American Bowl that he would be going to Cal.
But he apparently had a change of heart after Cal defensive line coach and super recruiter Tosh Luppi left the Golden Bears to join Steve Sarkisian's staff at Washington. Payton was part of a mass shift to Washington that included fellow Cal commitment Shaq Thompson, a highly ranked safety from Sacramento, and UCLA commitment Ellis McCarthy, a Monrovia defensive tackle considered a top-five player.
Thompson announced Monday night via Twitter he was heading to Washington. Then, Tuesday, Payton announced he, too, would be a Husky.
But now he's apparently on his way to UCLA, where he'll join a top-15 Bruins recruiting class that is believed to include quarterback Devin Fuller (New Jersey), defensive end Jeremy Castro (Vista Murrieta) and linebacker Nate Iese (Sacramento).
Payton will join a teammate from his Westfield Village school, Ishmael Adams, at UCLA. Former Oaks Christian Lions on the Bruins roster include defensive tackle Cassius Marsh and running back Malcolm Jones.
