ANN ARBOR, MICH. -- It figures the Detroit Red Wings couldn't escape the Winter Classic without a new injury.

Midway through the first period, Toronto forward Joffrey Lupul hit Patrick Eaves with his stick in the neck/jaw area.

Eaves was helped off the ice and went to the dressing room with the medical personnel.

Lupul was given a two-minute minor penalty for cross-checking.

Eaves did not come out with the Wings for the start of the second.

In the second period, they announced that Eaves had an upper-body injury and was questionable to return to the game.

After the game, Wings general manager told MLive.com that they would update Eaves' condition Thursday.

"Appears nothing broken but need a day to see how he feels," Holland told MLive.com.

Eaves has a bad history with concussions as he missed more than a season after taking a puck to the jaw off the stick of Nashville defenseman Roman Josi on Nov. 26, 2011.

Eaves suffered a broken jaw and severe concussion.

It wasn't until Jan. 18, 2013 that Eaves was cleared to return.
