DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) Captain Misbah-ul-Haq won the toss to mark Pakistan's 400th test match and chose to bat against the West Indies on Thursday which is only the second day-night test to be played with a pink ball.
Young Babar Azam, 21, who scored three successive centuries in Pakistan's 3-0 victory against the West Indies in a one-day series, and left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz, 22, were awarded test debuts.
Pakistan will be without its most experienced batsman Younis Khan, who is still recovering from dengue fever and is expected to join the team before the second test of the three-match series next week.
West Indies have so far struggled against Pakistan spinners on slow wickets in the United Arab Emirates.
Australia and New Zealand played the only previous day-night test match at Adelaide Oval in November last year.
