Padres deal D-backs fifth loss in six games
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Ian Kennedy was hanging in against the Padres -- until he hung changeups to rookie Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable and had to watch them them sail out of the park.
"Two changeups, two homers," Kennedy lamented after the Diamondbacks' 5-1 loss to the Padres on Sunday.
With Chase Headley aboard after being hit in the upper right arm by a pitch, Gyorko drove a 3-2 pitch an estimated 426 feet into the second deck in left field with two outs in the sixth inning, and Venable followed by hitting a 2-2 pitch into the front row of the home run porch in the right-field corner.
"I threw some good ones he took," Kennedy said of the changeups to Gyorko. "That was by far the worst one I threw all day."
Venable's homer chased Kennedy (1-3), who allowed five runs and five hits, struck out five and walked three in 5 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked three. After winning in St. Louis on Opening Day, he is 0-3 with a 5.70 ERA in six starts.
"I don't feel like I've thrown that bad until today," Kennedy said. "It weighs on you because you have to wait five more days."
Kennedy felt like he was battling without his best stuff until facing Gyorko and Venable.
"That's what (stinks) about this game. You do that, then you throw two bad pitches and it changes your whole day. If I had just gotten one more strike, it would have been a day where you battled throughout."
Edinson Volquez won his third straight start as the Padres, who took two of three from the Diamondbacks, won for the eighth time in 11 games. The D-backs have lost five of six.
Volquez (3-3) has rebounded from a rough opening stretch when he lost his first three starts and saw his ERA balloon to 11.68. He's 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA in his last four starts.
Volquez held Arizona to one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings while striking out three and walking three. The righty had only one bad inning, when he allowed Didi Gregorius' home run deep into the right-field seats leading off the third. He then gave up a double to Kennedy and, with two outs, walked the bases full. He got out of the jam by inducing Eric Chavez to ground out.
Gregorius' homer was his third of the year and extended his hitting streak to eight games. The Diamondbacks have homered in a season-high six straight games.
Headley extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the first, the third straight Padres batter to reach against Kennedy opening the inning. Everth Cabrera hit a leadoff double and Chris Denorfia walked ahead of Headley's single up the middle. Yonder Alonso added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
