The Packers made the homecoming rumors official late Tuesday
afternoon, announcing the signing of Matt Flynn to be the team’s backup
quarterback.
Flynn had been in Green Bay for a workout on Monday, and it
was widely expected that he’d sign with the team for which he’d played from
2008 through 2011. He’ll likely be the Packers’ backup quarterback once again –
though this time not for Aaron Rodgers, who’s out indefinitely with a broken
left collarbone.
To make room for Flynn, the Packers placed quarterback
Seneca Wallace on injured reserve. Wallace was fleetingly the starter but
hurt his groin on the first series of Sunday’s loss to Philadelphia. He was
replaced by Scott Tolzien, who threw for 280 yards has been declared the
starter for this week’s game against the New York Giants.
Flynn, the Packers’ seventh-round draft choice in 2008, is
in his sixth year in the NFL. After a successful tenure as Rodgers’ backup, he
left Green Bay in free agency to sign with Seattle. But after losing the job to
Russell Wilson, he was traded by the Seahawks to the Oakland Raiders, who
released him in October. Flynn then signed with Buffalo, but the Bills cut him
last Monday.
Wallace was signed by the Packers just before the regular
season began and was forced into action on Nov. 4 after Rodgers was injured
against Chicago. Despite struggling mightily and putting up just a 53.4 passer
rating against the Bears, Wallace got the starting nod for last week’s game
against the Eagles. On the Packers’ first drive, Wallace completed all five of
his passes for 25 yards, but hurt his groin and never returned to the game.
