GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Vince Young experiment with the Green Bay Packers lasted 26 days. Young lost out on the Packers' backup quarterback job and was released Saturday morning.
"Thanks to the Packers for the opportunity," Young posted on his Twitter account. "Great organization, great team, wonderful fans. Good luck this season."
Last week, it seemed like Young was sure to be No. 2 on Green Bay’s depth chart after the team released last year's backup, Graham Harrell. However, coach Mike McCarthy refuted that idea at the time.
"We have two quarterbacks here (and) the No. 2 spot hasn't been answered," McCarthy said on Aug. 25.
With starter Aaron Rodgers resting during the preseason finale Thursday, Young was the Packers' starter against the Kansas City Chiefs. Young completed 14 of 30 passes for 144 yards, with two fumbles, no touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 61.0. After successfully rushing three times for 39 yards in Green Bay's third preseason game, Young was only able to scramble for 12 yards on three attempts in Kansas City.
For now, this move means that B.J. Coleman -- a seventh-round pick in 2012 who was on the Packers' practice squad as a rookie -- will be Rodgers' backup. But Green Bay could still grab a different quarterback who is released Saturday.
The NFL deadline for teams to be down to 53 players was Saturday at 5 p.m. CDT. Young was just one of 22 players that the Packers parted ways with.
