Outkick's Top Ten For Week 12 And SEC Power Rankings
For those of you who didn't believe it before, are you starting to recognize that we're going to finish with a legitimate BCS mess this year?
With three weeks left in the college football season, we've got four undefeated teams -- Alabama, Florida State, Baylor, and Ohio State.
Only Baylor will be challenged this coming week -- on the road at Oklahoma State.
Alabama, FSU, and Ohio State will definitely beat the murderer's row of Chattanooga, Idaho, and Indiana.
So if Baylor wins, look out.
Four undefeated teams at the end of the season looms as a very, very real possibility.
Outkick's National Top Ten:
1. Alabama
The Crimson Tide is the best team in the country, but can we please stop talking about AJ McCarron as a Heisman candidate? He isn't. Period.
Based on the present AP top 25 Alabama will play 5 top 25 teams this year. The other three undefeated teams will play five.
So if anyone still wants to talk about Alabama's schedule, just stop.
2. Florida State
The biggest obstacle to the Seminoles finishing undefeated is a Tallahassee criminal investigation into Jameis Winston.
That's it.
Otherwise Florida State isn't losing.
But for as much crap as Ohio State takes about its schedule, why does no one point out that Florida State has played just one present top 25 team all season? Sure, they crushed Clemson, but it's just one decent opponent. The rest of the schedule is just awful.
3. Baylor
The Bears roll into Stillwater this weekend for a showdown with Oklahoma State.
Win that game and 12-0 becomes virtually assured.
But will the Bears win?
I like Oklahoma State's chances at pulling off the upset.
4. Oregon
Left for dead after the loss to Stanford -- who I've dropped out of the top ten this week for their second loss to an unranked team -- the Ducks are Ouktick's top one loss team in the country.
Win out and who knows what might happen?
After all, remember the past two seasons when Alabama's November loss supposedly spelled disaster for the Tide's title chances?
The Ducks aren't dead yet.
5. Missouri
Now that Georgia has lost and South Carolina has finished off its SEC season 6-2, there's just one question that remains -- can the Tigers win at Ole Miss and close with a win against Texas A&M? The Tigers have to win both or South Carolina will be headed to Atlanta.
Given that both these final two teams are ranked in the top 25 and that Mizzou would presumably then play Alabama in the SEC title game, a 12-1 Mizzou would end up the highest ranked one loss team in the country.
6. Auburn
When Auburn was up 20 points in the fourth quarter, I Tweeted they were the best one loss team in the country.
Then the wheels came off and Auburn needed a miracle to win.
The lesson? Outkick's approbation can be yanked at a moment's notice.
But right now Auburn is playing extraordinary football.
I can't wait to see what's going to happen in the Iron Bowl.
7. Ohio State
This isn't bias at all, I believe the six teams ranked above the Buckeyes would all win on neutral sites.
I don't reward teams merely because they haven't lost. I want to see who a team has beaten and played. Otherwise Fresno State and Northern Illinois should both be in the top ten as well.
College football needs to break the habit of merely rewarding an undefeated team.
Wisconsin's a good win, but after that Ohio State's schedule is just atrocious.
Ohio State did, however, get some good news, Michigan State won, which means that if the Spartans don't choke between now and December 7th Urban Meyer may finally play a top 15 opponent at Ohio State.
8. Texas A&M
The Aggies didn't play.
But Johnny Football's repeat as a Heisman contender is there for the taking.
Win at LSU and at Mizzou -- Manziel's never lost on the road as a starter -- and Archie Griffin will have company.
9. South Carolina
The Gamecocks were pretty awful against Florida.
But they won.
And South Carolina's schedule is brutal. In addition to the SEC slate, the Gamecocks played North Carolina and at UCF. Plus, they've still got Clemson coming to Columbia in two weeks. But up next is the lone cupcake in Spurrier's schedule, Coastal Carolina.
10. Clemson
Congrats to Clemson, who I'm bringing back to the top ten for the first time since the Florida State shellacking.
Out of the national title race, Clemson's season can still be a success if Dabo's boys can end the losing streak against South Carolina.
Outkick's SEC Power Rankings:
1. Alabama
The unquestioned best team in the SEC.
2. Missouri
Does anyone realize that we're an awful fourth quarter away from talking about Mizzou as the most dominant team in the country -- alongside Florida State -- through ten football games?
Hell, if Missouri had just played decent defense in overtime against South Carolina, the Tigers would be 10-0, have locked up an SEC title game bid against Alabama, and we'd all be talking about that game as a play-in to the BCS title game.
But it's hard to quibble with 9-1.
3. Auburn
I still don't know what to say about that miracle touchdown pass.
It was simply unbelievable.
God loves the Tigers right now.
4. Texas A&M
The Aggies lost to Alabama and Auburn, who are a combined 19-1 on the season.
Now comes the big question, can Johnny Manziel, who hasn't lost on the road in his career, lead the Aggies to wins at LSU and at Mizzou.
If he does, the Heisman's his.
5. South Carolina
The Gamecocks were pretty atrocious against Florida.
But they'll be 9-2 when Clemson rolls into town.
If Spurrier can handle Dabo once more, the Gamecocks will have ten wins in the regular season for a third straight year.
That's a stupendous accomplishment.
6. Georgia
If you had any doubt the Bulldogs are truly cursed this season, all you needed to do was watch the end of the Auburn game.
It's an ending we'll be talking about for years to come.
7. Ole Miss
Rebel fans will be upset with me for not bumping them above Georgia, but I think Georgia would win a game between the two teams on a neutral site right now.
If Ole Miss beats Mizzou, however, there will be no doubt that the Rebels deserve to be slotted just outside the top five.
After all, with losses at Alabama, at Auburn, and to Texas A&M, Hugh Freeze has done a heck of a job in his second season.
8. LSU
Win out and it will be a pedestrian 9-3 season for Les Miles and LSU.
Lose to A&M and there will be lots of angry Bayou Bengal fans.
So what happens Saturday?
It's must see television.
9. Vanderbilt
The Commodores are bowl eligible for a third straight season.
Now comes a road game at Tennessee.
Win that one and James Franklin is likely to post back-to-back eight win seasons.
That's an extraordinary accomplishment.
10. Florida
Give the Gators credit, they played hard at South Carolina.
They're just so bad on offense right now they have no margin for error. Especially with a third string quarterback.
It may be a crazy prediction, but I think the Gators are going to make the FSU game incredibly ugly in two weeks. I don't think the Gators will win, but they'll drag FSU down into the muck.
11. Tennessee
Butch Jones's first season comes down to two games -- can the Vols win against Vanderbilt and then go on the road and beat Kentucky?
Neither game will be easy.
Not even Kentucky.
12. Mississippi State
State isn't good, but they played very hard against Alabama. If they play like that against Arkansas, they'll beat the Razorbacks in the saddest SEC game of the year.
Bright side: Nick Saban definitely thinks Mississippi State is the best 4-6 team in the country.
13. Kentucky
Credit to the Wildcats for playing pretty well at Vandy. The final score was 22-6, but the margin between the two teams wasn't that substantial.
Which means, look out Vol fans, there's a decent chance the Wildcats can pull off the upset in Lexington.
14. Arkansas
The Razorbacks have a real shot at notching an SEC victory this coming Saturday against Mississippi State.
Anybody else think Bret Bielema watched Wisconsin hammer Indiana on Saturday and wished he was still coaching in the Big Ten?
