Joining defenseman Brad Stuart on the sidelines for the next six to eight weeks is goaltender Chris Osgood.

The Red Wings said Osgood underwent successful surgery to repair a sports hernia Tuesday. Dr. William Meyers performed the procedure in Philadelphia. Meyers is the same surgeon who repaired Kris Draper's sports hernia Oct. 21.

Osgood has been fighting a groin injury since late October and missed all 13 November games before playing Dec. 3 at Anaheim.

Osgood, who became the 10th goaltender in history to reach 400 wins, Dec. 27 at Colorado, has a 5-3-2 record with a 2.77 goals-against average.

Joey MacDonald was recalled from Grand Rapids of the AHL and will fill in for Osgood.

Forward Valtteri Filppula returned to the lineup Monday in Colorado after missing two games with a groin injury.

Pavel Datsyuk (broken hand) and Danny Cleary (broken ankle) are expected to return around the All-Star break (Jan. 27-31).

Osgood, Stuart (broken jaw) and Mike Modano (lacerated wrist) are all expected back in early March.
