Oklahoma WR suffered broken tooth in season opener

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:47 p.m. ET

Oklahoma receiver Dede Westbrook didn't wear a mouthpiece last game, but it's unlikely he'll make that mistake again.

Westbrook carried the ball -- an 8-yard loss -- on a reverse and he was tackled by Akron's Se'von Pittman. The hit was big enough to break one of Westbrook's top front teeth. He left the game but returned after getting some treatment.

"I'm stubborn and going out without a mouthpiece and I paid for it," Westbrook said to The Oklahoman. "I've played football my whole life without a mouthpiece."

Westbrook has spent the week on a liquid diet. It hasn't seemed to bother him, though.

"They have my drinking smoothies and things of that nature," Westbrook told The Oklahoman. "Which is not very bad because I love ice cream and I love those types of things so whenever you can have it in a blender like that, it's great."
