Nowitzki rushes to cut off beard after win
In early February, Dallas Mavericks team members like Dirk Nowitzki and Vince Carter revealed that the group would not shave their beards until the Mavs climbed back to .500.
On Sunday afternoon in New Orleans, the Mavericks finally reached their milestone, and Nowitzki couldn't get rid of his facial hair fast enough. Dallas improved to 40-40 by defeating the Hornets 107-89.
The 34-year-old future Hall of Famer quickly made his way to the Mavs locker room and cleaned up with an electric trimmer before doing a postgame TV interview.
Here's a photo of Nowitzki taken by Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News:
Mavericks team owner Mark Cuban added this tweet minutes after the victory:
According to Townsend, Nowitzki joked that his wife hasn't kissed him since February because of his scruffy facial hair.
After falling to 11-11 on Dec. 12, Dallas lost 12 of its next 14. Not until April 10 did the Mavs get another opportunity to shave, however, they lost 102-91 to the Phoenix Suns.
Their next grooming chance came on April 2 in Los Angeles. But again, Dallas lost 101-81. After losing 103-78 to the Indiana Pacers on March 28, it was starting to look like they'd fall short.
Nowitzki and Co. are surely disappointed that they will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, but at least they met their goal, and more importantly, they don't have to deal with ZZ Top beards during a hot Dallas summer.
