Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki will be out of action for at least six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday.

The team announced the procedure was performed at Texas Sports Medicine in Dallas by team orthopedic surgeon T.O. Souryal after Nowitzki missed the last three preseason games.

The Mavericks open the regular season on Oct. 30 in Los Angeles against the Lakers. The surgery will force Nowitzki to miss at least the first month of the NBA season.

Nowitzki, 34, is the centerpiece around a completely rebuilt Dallas squad which added free agents O.J. Mayo, Elton Brand, Chris Kaman and Darren Collison in the offseason. He is entering his 15th season in the NBA.
