Dirk Nowitzki says his right knee is improving, but it's up in the air when he'll return to the court.

"I actually feel pretty good," the Mavericks' star forward said on TNT's broadcast of Dallas' 99-93 defeat against San Antonio on Thursday night. "What happened was I think the knee was giving me a little trouble two weeks before and I just came down wrong. It's just a sprain, so that was the great news, and now I'm taking it day by day.

"It's already better than it was two days ago, but it wasn't good enough to play today (Thursday against the Spurs). I would have loved to have been out here in front of this crowd, but unfortunately it didn't work. Maybe this weekend, maybe early next week, that's what I'm looking at."

Fortunately for the Mavericks, if there was ever a slate of games for Nowitzki to miss, the next three would be it. Dallas plays a weekend back to back at Milwaukee, which is playing without Brandon Jennings, and at Cleveland, which sports the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

The Mavs are then off on Monday before hosting struggling Portland on Tuesday. The Trail Blazers just lost Brandon Roy indefinitely.

If Nowitzki is not back by then, however, things could get rough. After an off day on Wednesday, the Mavericks must host the Thunder on Thursday and the Magic on Saturday.
