Non-CFP 2014 bowl schedule released for Big 12
The Big 12 will be happy with its new bowl lineup for 2014. Commissioner Bob Bowlsby wanted to keep the Big 12 "anchored" in Texas and add a new home in Florida. The league wanted to keep a home in Arizona and give fans an additional game within driving distance.
It's all been accomplished, and the Big 12 will also matchup against the SEC in three of its seven bowl contracts, compared with just one in the previous agreement.
The Big 12's biggest addition is the Russell Athletic Bowl, played in Orlando, Fla. Three games (Alamo, Texas, Heart of Dallas) will be played in Texas and the league kept its agreement with the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. It also agreed to a contract with the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., which attracted 25,000 Iowa State fans in 2012.
Beginning in 2014, the AT&T Cotton Bowl will play host to the CFP national championship game and be a semifinal in select other years. Because of the Cotton Bowl's inclusion into the CFP, the Big 12 no longer has an exclusive agreement to play the SEC in that game.
Here's the order the bowls will pick Big 12 teams next season once the four College Football Playoff teams are selected.
1. Sugar Bowl (vs. SEC)
2. Alamo Bowl (vs. Pac-12)
3. Russell Athletic Bowl (vs. ACC)
4. Texas Bowl (vs. SEC)
5. Liberty Bowl (vs. SEC)
6. Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (vs. Pac-12)
7. Heart of Dallas (vs. C-USA) / Armed Forces Bowl (vs. American)
