Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Kyle Lohse won't be traded, as the club has reportedly decided to hold on to the veteran.
According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Lohse was claimed off waivers and then pulled back by the Brewers after they did not see a potential trade match with the claiming team.
Teams usually put the majority of their roster on waivers in August because there's no penalty to pull players back, as the Brewers did with Lohse. After the non-waiver trade deadline of July 31, players must clear waivers or be moved to their claiming team in order to be moved.
Signed to a three-year, $33 million contract just prior to Opening Day, Lohse is 7-7 with a 3.23 ERA in 23 starts for the Brewers this season. The 34-year-old hit a rough patch in May in which he pitched through elbow and hamstring injuries, but Lohse has a 2.37 ERA in his last 13 starts.
While Lohse is now off the market, the Brewers still may make some noise before Aug. 31. While not a hard deadline, playoff teams must acquire players before Sept. 1 for them to be eligible for the postseason roster.
Relievers such as left-hander Michael Gonzalez and right-hander John Axford could move, but both currently aren't pitching well. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez would be an August trade candidate, but he still hasn't returned from the disabled list and is running out of time to show teams he can be productive down the stretch. While chances of him moving were slim to begin with, second baseman Rickie Weeks' hamstring injury will likely prevent him from being dealt.
