Sorry, but there aren't any cheerful historical notes tonight.

The Tigers aren't unbeaten in the World Series when the third-base coach waves home the team's worst base runner with no one out.

They don't always win when the starting pitcher gets saddled with a loss after getting hit in the head with a line drive and not allowing a single run while he's on the mound.

It's fair to question Gene Lamont's decision to send Prince Fielder to the plate. It's fair to question Jim Leyland's decision to walk a guy with 12 homers to face the NL MVP. It's fair to wonder why Gerald Laird didn't just field the bunt.

But at the end of the day, you have to score a run.

The Tigers didn't do that, and now they are in deep trouble.
