NFL Week 5 awards: Best and worst from Sunday's action
By Andy Nesbitt, FOXSports.comWorst interception by a QB: Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys. With the score tied 48-48 and just over two minutes remaining, it looked like Romo was ready to lead the Cowboys on a game-winning drive. Then this happened:
Best 1-yard TD run by a slow quarterback: Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos. Peyton completely fooled the Cowboys defense by running (kinda) for his first rushing TD in FIVE YEARS.
Best body slam by an offensive lineman: D.J. Fluker, San Diego Chargers. While many of you on the East Coast were sleeping, Fluker did this to Oakland's Sio Moore:
Best fumble return for a TD to tie an NFL record: Charles Woodson, Oakland Raiders. While many of you on the East Coast were sleeping, Woodson was busy tying an NFL record with his 13th career defensive touchdown.
Best flipping touchdown celebration: David Wilson, New York Giants. The Giants fell to 0-5 on Sunday, but Wilson's impressive celebration after finding the end zone in the first quarter was still pretty cool:
Here, watch it on a loop:
Worst touchdown celebration: Julius Thomas, Denver Broncos. The tight end was so excited after scoring against the Cowboys that he spiked the ball into his face:
Worst attempt at a tackle by a kicker, who then pays quite a price for not making the tackle: Jon Ryan, Seattle Seahawks. Ryan, Seattle's punter and placeholder, probably didn't think this would happen when the Seahawks attempted a field goal in the second quarter:
Here's how you get a punter off the field:
Worst start to a game by a QB who couldn't afford to have a bad night: Matt Schaub, Houston Texans. You might remember what happened to Schaub last week -- that ol' pick six in the final minutes that ultimately led to an OT loss to Seahawks. So how'd he start Sunday night's game against the 49ers? Like this:
Funniest reaction by a coach: Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks. Carroll, who is never one to hide his emotions, was hoping the refs would rule that his defense had a scored a TD after a blocked punt, not a safety. And for a split second he thought they did. Oops.
Here's the play in question:
Best reaction to Peyton Manning's first interception of season: Everyone in Jerry Jones' suite. Jerry Jones was pretty pumped after Peyton threw an interception in the third quarter. But the kid in the blue shirt WAS REALLY EXCITED. If only we could have seen their reaction to Romo's interception late in the fourth quarter.
Weirdest GIF of an owner clapping after a good play: Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys. We were going to try to write something funny about this but we'll just let this GIF do all the talking:
Best catch by a QB (of his own pass): Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tennessee Titans. This play pretty much sums of Fitzpatrick's day for the Titans, and possibly his entire career. No touchdown for you, Mr. Fitzpatrick.
Worst way to commit your first turnover of the year: Tennessee Titans. The Titans entered their Week 5 matchup against Kansas City with zero turnovers on the season. That's a great accomplishment. And then this happened:
Weirdest touchdown celebration: James Jones, Green Bay Packers. Jones had a huge day in the Packers' win over the Lions. But we're not really sure what he was trying to do at the end of this 83-yard TD pass.
Worst cheap shot: Justin Tuck, New York Giants. Sure, Michael Vick probably tried to sell this a little bit but it still wasn't a cool move by Tuck:
Best job of turning an ugly play into a beautiful play: Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans. Things didn't look good for the Titans on this play, then Johnson took a short shovel pass from Fitzpatrick and made fantasy football owners proud:
Best game-ending interception in the rain: Pacman Jones, Cincinnati Bengals: Just when it looked like Tom Brady and the Patriots might be able to force overtime, Pacman stepped up and sealed the victory for the Bengals:
Worst weather: Cincinnati. Brady and the Patriots had to deal with the Bengals defense and an absolute downpour late in the fourth quarter.
Best Johnny Football-esque scramble by a QB: Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys' QB pulled off some great moves before completing a pass against the Broncos.
Worst scramble by a QB: Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys. Moments after pulling off the play seen above, Romo did this in the red zone:
Best way to describe two-time Super Bowl MVP QB who is now 0-5: Buzzfeed sports. They nailed this tweet:
Eli Manning’s transformation into Hobo Michael Phelps is nearly complete. pic.twitter.com/j82tnr3yA0 — BuzzFeed Sports (@BuzzFeedSports) October 6, 2013
Saddest mascot: T.D. (the dolphin), Miami Dolphins. This poor fella thought his team was going to force overtime with a late 57-yard field goal. But then the kick sailed wide left ... and T.D. was not happy.
Best job by a fan base to bring up a joke that is so six months ago: Oakland Raiders. Fans up in Oakland apparently still think the Manti Te'o jokes are funny:
