NCAA Regionals: Big West baseball roundup Day 2
Big West baseball struggled on Day 2 of the NCAA Tournament, going 1-3 with the lone win coming from UC Irvine. Cal Poly, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton will all play Sunday in elimination games.
UC Irvine 14, Oregon State 2
Elliot Surrey allowed two runs and three hits and struck out eight as UC Irvine beat No. 1 national seed Oregon State 14-2 on Saturday night in the winners' bracket of the NCAA Corvallis regional. UCI will play the winner of the Oregon State/UNLV elimination game at 8 p.m. Sunday.
Pepperdine 2, Cal Poly 1
In the San Luis Obispo regional, Pepperdine scored two runs in the seventh inning to come back and beat Cal Poly 2-1 on Saturday night. Mustangs pitcher Casey Bloomquist allowed two runs (one earned) and seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in eight innings of work. Cal Poly will face Sacramento State in a rematch of Friday's opening-round game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner will face Pepperdine in the championship final at 6 p.m.
College of Charleston 6, Long Beach State 3
Long beach State pitcher Josh Frye was cruising along until the sixth inning. Fry allowed five runs, including four in the sixth inning, in the Dirtbags' 6-3 loss to the College of Charleston. After Zack Belanger's sacrifice fly gave Long Beach State a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, the College of Charleston answered back in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to take the lead. Long Beach will face North Carolina on Sunday at 10 a.m. A win would give Long Beach State a rematch with the Cougars at 7 p.m. in the Regional Finals.
Oklahoma State 13, Cal State Fullerton 7
Tanner Krietemeier had three hits and drove in five runs, including an RBI single during a five-run fifth inning, as Oklahoma State rolled to a 13-7 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night in an NCAA regional contest. The Titans will play Sunday at 10 a.m. against second-seeded Nebraska, which it defeated 5-1 Friday, to determine the region's other finalist.
