MLB Quick Hits: Reyes, Tanaka begin rehab assignments

Published May. 21, 2015 6:59 a.m. ET

Let's start with some good news today. Blue Jays SS Jose Reyes, who has been dealing with a cracked rib since April 27, starts a rehab assignment today at Triple A. The team's website reports that Reyes will probably play three games, get Sunday off, and join the Jays' lineup on Monday.

Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka, who has been on the DL since April 29 with wrist tendinitis and a forearm strain, will make a Triple-A start tonight. According to the Yankees' website, the plan is for Tanaka to throw three innings or 45 pitches. The team wants Tanaka to be ready for at least 90 pitches, so it's possible that he makes another rehab start next Tuesday and pitches for the Yankees again on May 31 or June 1.

Don't panic about the Nationals' boxscore. Bryce Harper left early because he got ejected, not injured.

Angels 1B Albert Pujols left Wednesday's game with a bruised left wrist. X-rays were negative, but he could miss "a few days," according to the Orange County Register.

As feared, Dodgers SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) is done for the season

After stealing three bases on Wednesday, Diamondbacks OF A.J. Pollock is batting .298 with four home runs, 15 RBI, 27 runs and nine stolen bases. That's a pretty strong season.

Shawn Tolleson got Wednesday's save for the Rangers, but the team keeps saying there are no bullpen roles.

A's SP Drew Pomeranz is on the DL with a shoulder sprain. Teammate Coco Crisp will see a neck specialist today, and could be looking at an extended absence.

With Wil Myers (wrist) on the DL, Yangervis Solarte has been batting fifth and playing first base for the Padres. He's eligible at 2B/3B on DraftKings for $2,900 today, and at 3B only on FanDuel, where he's $2,200.

Blue Jays OF Michael Saunders is expected to miss another 3-5 weeks with a bruised knee.

There are six afternoon games on today's schedule, starting with Diamondbacks-Marlins at 12:10 p.m. ET. Set your lineups early.

Speaking of the D-backs, Chase Anderson whiffed only two Marlins on Wednesday, but checked all the other boxes as our streaming starter. Today's pick is Oakland's underappreciated Jesse Chavez (owned in 32.5 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) at Tampa.

DFS early-game advice (salaries from DraftKings): I got almost everything wrong on Wednesday, so today has to be a big day, right? ... We start Clayton Kershaw ($12,400) at San Francisco, and work from there ... Since starting Kershaw probably makes David Price too expensive, I'm using Mat Latos ($6,600) as my SP2 vs. the D-backs ... Start Jose Altuve ($4,300) against a lefty, even if it's Price ... Phillies C Carlos Ruiz ($3,500) isn't hitting much, but he always handles LHP (.813 career OPS) and faces Jorge De La Rosa at Coors Field ... Lock in Adam Jones ($4,400) vs. J.A. Happ ... Michael Cuddyer ($3,600) can be used at 1B or OF, and gets LHP Jaime Garcia in his season debut ... Save money with Cuddyer's lefty-mashing teammate, John Mayberry ($2,400).

DFS late-game advice: For $7,900, Clay Buchholz looks like a solid play against the Rangers, who are pretty bad vs. RHP (.293 wOBA). Chavez ($7,200) and Danny Salazar ($9,300) are your other SP plays, depending on how much you'd like to spend ... Yes, you should start OF Ryan Raburn ($2,900) against John Danks ... Mookie Betts ($4,300) and Dustin Pedroia ($4,100) should lead your Red Sox stack against Wandy Rodriguez, who I'll keep betting against until I'm right. 1B Mike Napoli ($4,000) isn't a bad option, nor is SS Xander Bogaerts ($3,500) ... A's C Stephen Vogt ($3,700) looks good vs. Alex Colome ... If you can afford it, play Anthony Rizzo ($4,900) vs. Odrisamer Despaigne.

Finally, I'd like to wish a Happy 76th Birthday to my mother, Pam. She can barely walk, but flew to Charlotte this week to watch my daughter's school play. She's the best.

See you back here tomorrow morning.
