MLB Draft: Arizona players

Here's a running tally of Arizona players selected in this week's MLB Draft. The scouting reports come from MLB.com.

Mountain Pointe HS shortstop Cole Tucker -- Pittsburgh Pirates -- 24th overall. An alumni of the gold-medal winning 18 and under U.S. National Team last summer, Tucker is an athletic shortstop with a chance to stay at the premium position. The University of Arizona commit is a switch-hitter with a projectable body. He's a better hitter from the left side, and while he doesn't have power right now, he does have room to add strength. Still, his best offensive tool will be his speed, which plays well on both sides of the ball. He has the range, hands, arm and instincts to remain at shortstop as well. His defense is ahead of his offense right now, but there is projection in his bat.

Brophy Prep RHP Ryan Castellani -- Colorado Rockies -- 48th overall. A relative veteran of the amateur showcase circuit, Castellani has been a prospect for quite some time. With his size and stuff, he has the chance to make an even bigger name for himself at the next level. Castellani has room to add strength to his 6-foot-4 frame, and that might allow him to add to his fastball that often touches 93 mph and features a ton of heavy sink. Both his changeup and his breaking ball have the chance to be at least Major League average. He has a good feel for pitching overall and has improved his command thanks to some refinement to his delivery. Castellani may not light up radar guns to the extent some of this year's Draft prospects do, but his ground-ball ability, feel for pitching and room for growth still make him very intriguing.

Sahuaro HS LHP Alex Verdugo -- Los Angeles Dodgers -- 62nd overall. When the spring began, Verdugo was one of the few two-way prospects in the Draft class that may have had a split camp over whether he should hit or pitch. As the Draft drew closer, it became increasingly apparent that most teams saw his future on the mound. As a pitcher, Verdugo projects as a No. 3 starter at the big league level. While not the biggest pitcher in the world, he does have a compact and efficient delivery. His three-quarters delivery gives him good angle and movement on his fastball, which averages 89-91 mph and has reached 94. He could add more velocity if he focuses on pitching full-time, and he also features a promising curveball and a changeup with some life. The athleticism that made him a solid outfield prospect, and would help him be a potential two-way player at Arizona State, should aid him in his development as a pitcher.

Central Arizona College RHP Brock Dykxhoorn -- Houston Astros -- 166th overall. After committing to Central Arizona in high school, Dykxhoorn was selected in the 20th round of the 2012 Draft. He didn't sign and wound up deciding to attend West Virginia. He transferred to Central Arizona after a year and pitched his way up Draft boards this spring. Dykxhoorn throws his fastball around 90 mph and uses his big frame to create a good downhill angle. His slider has made strides this spring, giving him a third average offering to go with his fastball and changeup. Dykxhoorn pitches with more control than command and has to be careful to keep the ball down in the zone, as his fastball flattens out when he leaves it up. Despite his size, he already repeats his delivery well and has the potential to develop into a Major League starter.
