Minor injury suffered during arena implosion
A Florida man was taken to a hospital Sunday morning shortly after the implosion of the old Amway Arena in Orlando, a TV station reported.
According to WFTV in Orlando, a man watching the implosion nearly two blocks away on Amelia Street -- the same road on which the arena was located -- was struck in the leg by a piece of rebar, the reinforcement steel used in the arena's construction.
The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital, though the injury did not appear to be serious, WFTV reported.
The opening of the Amway Center, home of the NBA’s Orlando Magic, in October 2010 paved the way for the demolition of the old arena. It’s the next step in the city’s quest to update its downtown area with what it’s calling a "Creative Village" that will aim to attract technology companies.
