Midnight Storm scores upset in Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Midnight Storm won the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile by a half-length at Santa Anita, earning an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup this fall.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Midnight Storm ran a mile on turf in 1:33.55 and paid $11.20, $5.80 and $3.60 at 9-2 odds on Saturday, when temperatures reached an unseasonable 88 degrees.
Tourist returned $5 and $2.80, while Twentytwentyvision paid $3 to show.
Heart to Heart, the 4-5 favorite, finished fourth in the six-horse field.
Trained by Phil D'Amato, Midnight Storm earned an automatic berth in the BC Mile at the same track in November. The 5-year-old horse's entry fees will be waived.
Midnight Storm turned the tables on Tourist, having finished seventh to him in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic on the Kentucky Derby undercard May 7. Bejarano took over Saturday from Victor Espinoza, who rode Midnight Storm in his previous two losses.
