DETROIT -- Although they're focused on their own season, a few Red Wings are aware of the situation in Ann Arbor.

Jim Harbaugh was officially named Michigan football's head coach Tuesday.

"It's exciting," Michigan alum Luke Glendening said. "Obviously his NFL experience is huge and hopefully they'll get that program turned around."

Harbaugh went 49-21-1 with the San Francisco 49ers, making three NFC title games and one Super Bowl, which he lost to his brother, John, and the Baltimore Ravens.

"It's exciting to get a Michigan guy in there," Glendening said. "I thought he did a good job when he was (in San Francisco), great man, for sure. Things didn't work out but they'll be all right."

The Wolverines have won just one of their last 11 games against their rival, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

In their other rivalry, against the Michigan State Spartans, the Wolverines have won one of their last seven after winning six in a row.

Fortunately for Glendening, teammates Drew Miller and Justin Abdelkader, both Spartans, don't remind him of it.

"No, we don't talk too much about it," Glendening said. "I think they know they have the upper hand."

That could all change with Harbaugh.

"He's a good NFL coach but being a Spartan, I hope it doesn't work out for them," Miller said. "He's a good pickup for them."

Now that Harbaugh will be facing off against MSU's Mark Dantonio and Ohio State's Urban Meyer, the Big Ten will surely attract more national attention.

"I think he brings some notoriety, big-name coach, so more publicity for the Big Ten, for sure," Miller said.
