Miami Hurricanes announce plans for new uniforms in 2014
Few logos in sports rival the brand awareness of the U. The same goes for the orange-green combination.
The University of Miami football program announced Friday it will wear newly designed uniforms by Nike during the 2014 season.
Miami's uniforms in 2013 were initially unveiled seven years ago. Over that stretch, the Hurricanes did don three special-edition ones: two variations in 2009 and 2010 as well as #TheSmoke uniforms and helmets in a November 2013 loss to Virginia Tech. Those helmets were also used in December's Russell Athletic Bowl.
''The timing is right and we want a uniform that speaks to our tradition, yet recognizes current trends,'' coach Al Golden said in a release. ''Nike is working on innovative designs with the latest performance technology and we are excited to unveil them this spring.''
A formal unveiling is scheduled during the coming months. Fan jerseys will be sold at retail stores before the season opener Sept. 1 at Louisville.
''Historically, UM has been a trend setter in college football for uniform designs,'' athletic director Blake James said in a release. ''There is no better design team than the group of experts at Nike, and we're excited about bringing new uniforms to our team and especially our fan base that has been asking for a refreshed look. We have one of the most recognizable brands in college athletics, and we look forward to strengthening that position in the years to come.''
