Melvin Hunt joining Mavericks as lead assistant
The Mavericks will be getting a new assistant coach this season as soon as a deal is reached, according to head coach Rick Carlisle. Former Denver Nuggets interim head coach Melvin Hunt will join Dallas as the team's lead assistant.
"We are working through getting his deal done with his representatives," Carlisle said. "That's going to happen. He's in town, excited to have him on board."
Hunt served as an assistant in Denver from 2010-15 before taking over for a fired Brian Shaw in March. Prior to that, Hunt was with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005-10. He was with the Lakers under Rudy Tomjanovich from 2004-05 and with the two-time NBA Champion head coach in Houston from 1999-04 in assistant and scouting capacities.
The Mavericks will be losing assistant Monte Mathis, who departs Dallas to join new Magic head coach Scott Skiles. Mathis was with the team for the past 10 seasons.
"We are really happy for him," said Carlisle. "I've really enjoyed working with Monte; he's a great basketball man. A great worker. His growth over the last seven years that I've been here has been a great thing to watch."
