Marlins' Jarrod Saltalamacchia returns home to find crashed plane
Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia found a shocking sight upon arriving back at his Wellington subdivision following Monday's workout in Jupiter, Fla.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, Saltalamacchia witnessed a partially submerged home-built aircraft that crashed into a lake at the Aero Club -- a private aviation community with its own runway.
Leonard "Link" McGarity, a former helicopter pilot in the Marines and commercial pilot for American Airlines, did not survive the crash.
Saltalamacchia, whose family moved in last September, did not know McGarity. His home is on the opposite end of the runway where the plane went down around 1 p.m.
"He was still laying there and they were covering him up best they could," Saltalamacchia told the Sentinel. "Firefighters were there. It was crazy."
