Marlins at Giants game preview
As the Miami Marlins look to continue their road success in San Francisco, Jacob Turner will try again to record his first career victory away from home.
The right-hander tries to help the Marlins win their fourth straight road series at AT&T Park and first overall away from home this season Sunday.
Miami (23-21) fell to a major league-worst 4-16 on the road when it lost 6-4 to San Francisco on Thursday, but has outscored the Giants 12-5 to win the last two. The Marlins have won 12 of 14 at AT&T Park, but have not won a road series anywhere since taking two of three at Wrigley Field from Sept. 2-4.
Giancarlo Stanton hit his 12th homer of the season -- tying him for the NL lead -- and first triple since September 2012, and Tom Koehler held the Giants (27-17) to four of their six hits in seven innings of Saturday's 5-0 victory.
Stanton's 17-game hitting streak ended Friday when he went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts, but he's batting .391 with five home runs and 14 RBI in his last 19 contests. He's hitting .327 with nine homers and 21 RBI in 27 career games against the Giants.
Turner (0-1, 6.75 ERA) is 0-10 with a 3.97 ERA in 17 career road starts and 0-8 with a 5.38 ERA in 16 overall since beating Atlanta on July 10. The right-hander, who has already missed a month of the season because of a strained shoulder, gave up five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 7-1 loss at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday.
Turner, however, allowed one run in seven innings of a 2-1, 11-inning loss at San Francisco on June 22.
Backup catcher Hector Sanchez had three hits Saturday for the Giants, who have been shut out twice in five games. San Francisco, which looks to avoid matching a season high with three straight defeats, had won 16 of 21 prior to its last two contests.
"I've said this many times, when you don't hit and score runs, you look flat," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said.
San Francisco's Hunter Pence is 11 for 23 in the last five games, and batting .373 in his last 18 versus Miami.
Scheduled Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (1-2, 4.22) allowed two runs and 12 hits in 20 1/3 innings while going 1-0 in his previous three starts before allowing four runs and seven hits in six innings of a 5-0 loss to Atlanta on Tuesday.
Oddly, the right-hander is 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA on the road as a starter against the Marlins, but 0-2 despite a 1.20 ERA against the Marlins in that capacity at home.
Stanton is 4 for 12 with two doubles and two home runs versus Vogelsong.
Teammate Garrett Jones, who had a run-scoring triple Saturday, is batting .391 (9 for 23) with five extra-base hits, seven runs scored and four RBI in the last six games. He's hit .357 (5 for 14) with a double and a homer against Vogelsong.
