DETROIT -- With Justin Verlander and Phil Hughes locked in a pitchers duel, Delmon Young led off the Tiger's half of the fourth inning with a home run into Detroit's bullpen.
Hughes then walked Andy Dirks and had an 0-2 count on Jhonny Peralta when Yankees manager Joe Girardi and trainers went out to the mound. After a brief discussion, Hughes was gone.
Hughes threw 61 pitches, 36 for strikes, and held the Tigers to three hits.
David Phelps took over for Hughes, who left with a stiff back.
