Magic Musings: Comeback comes up short in Atlanta

The Orlando Magic were able to erase a 17-point third-quarter deficit but couldn't sustain that momentum and wound up losing 104-94 to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks snapped the Magic's four-game streak of holding opponents to less than 40 percent shooting. All five of their starters scored in double figures, while the Magic got a rare subpar night from center Nikola Vucevic (only seven points and six rebounds in 33 minutes).

For the third game in a row, the Magic had to endure a rough stretch of play in the third quarter. Trailing only 46-45 at halftime, they were outscored 18-2 by the Hawks in the first five minutes of the third. But with the help of reserves Andrew Nicholson, Victor Oladipo and Kyle O'Quinn, the Magic roared back and briefly took the lead.

The Magic had a much better game from 3-point range than they did Friday night in a 91-89 loss to the Boston Celtics. They went 8 of 17 from that distance, with Arron Afflalo and Jameer Nelson doing most of the damage. But turnovers were again a problem, as they gave the ball away 18 times to only 13 from the Hawks.

The Magic now have dropped 11 regular-season games in a row to the Hawks, including seven consecutive losses in Atlanta. It was also their 16th consecutive road loss. The last win came March 4 at New Orleans.

After the Magic took an 88-87 lead with 3:50 remaining on a 3-point field goal by Afflalo, the Hawks went on a 10-0 run. Al Horford made two jump shots off assists from Jeff Teague and then found Kyle Korver on a fast break for a 3-pointer.

Mike Scott is not as synonymous with the Hawks as Horford, Teague and Korver are. But the second-year forward scored 17 points off the bench in only 13 minutes.

The Hawks shot only two free throws through the first three quarters before going 10 of 15 from the line over the final 12 minutes.

Monday night at Boston, 7:30 p.m. (FOX Sports Florida).
