Lynx trade for veteran forward Jones
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Lynx are going to give an oft-injured forward another WNBA shot.
The team Wednesday traded its 2016 second-round pick to the Connecticut in exchange for exclusive negotiating rights to Asjha Jones. The 6-foot-3 forward is an 11-year veteran and two-time All-Star but has missed the past two seasons due to injury.
She sat out all of last year with a ruptured left Achilles tendon and 2013 because of "lingering injuries," according to a Lynx release.
Jones made the All-Star Game in 2007 and 2009 and set a then-single-season Sun franchise scoring record in 2008. In 337 career games, she is averaging 11.4 points on 45.1 percent shooting, five rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.
She was a member of the United States' 2012 Olympic gold-medal-winning club and has played professionally in Israel, Russia, Italy, China, Spain, Turkey and Slovakia. Jones finished the 2014-15 winter season Israeli team Elitzur Ramla and averaged 12.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in 18 contests.
The 34-year-old University of Connecticut product will join the Lynx for training camp, which is scheduled to begin this Sunday, May 17. They open the 2015 season at 7 p.m. Friday, June 5 at home against Tulsa.
