Lynx standout Whalen named WNBA All-Star as reserve
The WNBA on Tuesday night announced Minnesota Lynx veteran Lindsay Whalen had been voted by coaches as a reserve for the Western Conference All-Star squad.
However, due to Whalen's eye injury suffered on Sunday at Tulsa, the guard will not play in the WNBA All-Star Game on July 25. This would've been Whalen's fifth career All-Star Game appearance (2006, 2011, 2013-15).
Playing in her fifth season in Minnesota and 12th overall in the WNBA, Whalen is averaging 11.7 points and 4.3 assists per game, while shooting 47.2 percent from the field. Whalen was named Western Conference Player of the Week for June 22-28, after tallying 21 points against Phoenix on June 27.
Joining Whalen as backcourt reserves were Seattle's Sue Bird, Phoenix's DeWanna Bonner and San Antonio's Danielle Robinson, while Nneka Ogwuimike of Los Angeles and Plenette Pierson of Tulsa were voted in as frontcourt reserves.
Minnesota's Maya Moore and Seimone Augustus were named as starters for the Western Conference last week, alongside Phoenix's Brittney Griner and Candice Dupree and Tulsa's Skyler Diggins.
The Eastern Conference starters are Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry and Shoni Shcimmel, Chicago's Elena Delle Donne, New York's Tina Charles and Indiana's Tamika Catchings.
In the event of players being injured -- as is the case of Augustus, Whalen and Diggins -- replacement players will be named by WNBA President Laurel J. Richie. Any changes to the starting lineup necessitated by injury will be made by head coaches.
