Lynx sign star center Fowles to multiyear extension
The Minnesota Lynx inked Sylvia Fowles to a multiyear contract extension, the team announced Friday afternoon.
The details of the contract were not released (per team policy), but the way she's been playing all year, we hope she'll be in a Lynx uniform until 2042.
“We are happy to have extended the contract of one of our team leaders and one of the best players in the WNBA,” said Lynx Executive Vice President Roger Griffith, via a press release. “When we traded for Sylvia two seasons ago, we did so with the goal of winning more championships. That decision has paid off so far after she helped guide us to the 2015 WNBA Championship. Over the last three years, Sylvia has been an integral part of our success and is undoubtedly one of the elite centers in the WNBA. We are thrilled that she’s decided to continue her career with the Lynx.”
Fowles joined the Lynx in 2015 and was named Most Valuable Player in the WNBA Finals that year, the third league championship in team history.
This season, she's well on her way to winning league MVP. Fowles has been honored with the Player of the Month award three straight times, averaging 19.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.06 blocks per game.
The 6-foot-5 center has been named WNBA Defensive Player of the Year three times (most recently, last season), All-WNBA First-Team selection twice (2010, 2013) and WNBA All-Defensive First Team six times (2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016).
